Study knowledgebase

Use these guides to understand your brief, organise research and improve your own academic writing. Your module’s instructions and your institution’s assessment rules take priority.

Turn a brief into a plan

Identify the command word, subject and limits. “Analyse” asks you to explain relationships; “evaluate” asks for a judgement against criteria. Read the marking scheme alongside the question and write down what the finished work must establish.

Divide the work into reading, outlining, drafting, revision and submission. Leave a buffer for checking the exported file. Ask the module team about conflicting instructions.

Build an evidence trail

Search for sources that answer the question, using your library’s databases. Record publication details and page references as you read. Keep quotations separate from summaries.

Compare methods, settings and limitations when sources disagree. Explain why the evidence is relevant to your argument and distinguish company claims from independent research.

Make the reasoning visible

Give each section a purpose. Introduce a claim, support it and explain what the evidence establishes. The reader should understand how each paragraph contributes to the answer.

An introduction narrows the question and sets the direction. A conclusion brings the reasoning together and states its limits.

Use the required referencing style

Harvard, APA, MLA, Chicago and OSCOLA follow different conventions. Institutional guides may add local requirements. Choose the system named in the brief.

Credit ideas and data as well as quotations. Check that every citation leads to a full entry. Verify the details even when using a reference generator.

Review in separate passes

  1. Check that the argument answers the question.
  2. Verify claims and calculations.
  3. Check citations and the reference list.
  4. Review language, headings and figures.
  5. Open the final file and retain the submission receipt.

Frequently asked questions

Is a similarity score a plagiarism allowance?

No. A report highlights matches; attribution and assessment rules determine appropriate use.

Can support guarantee a mark?

No. Your institution assesses the work. Guidance helps you understand a task and revise your own draft.

What should I send?

The brief, criteria, deadline, referencing instructions and attempted work. Explain your specific question.

Can I use writing tools?

Check the assessment rules, verify information and disclose use where required.
