A database organises stored data, while a database management system provides ways to define, query and manage that data. In an assignment, explain the data model and the needs it serves before choosing tools or writing queries.
Separate the data from the software
A database is not simply the screen used to enter information. The interface, application logic and stored data play different roles. Examples of relational database systems include PostgreSQL and MySQL, but their presence does not establish that a particular design is suitable. Describe what information the case needs to represent and which operations must be supported.
Model entities and relationships
Identify the things the system records and how they relate. Explain keys, attributes and any assumptions about optional or repeated relationships. A diagram should match the proposed tables and business rules. Avoid giving every piece of information its own table without a reason, or placing several unrelated values in one field because it appears convenient.
Make queries answer a defined question
State what a query should return before writing it. Test filtering, joins, duplicates and missing values against a small, deliberate dataset. Check whether the query still works when a record has no related entry. A correct result for one happy-path dataset does not prove that the query implements every requirement.
Consider integrity and transactions
Discuss how the design prevents inconsistent or invalid data at the level required by the module. A transaction groups operations according to the system’s supported behaviour; it is not a substitute for explaining the intended rules. Use the documentation for the chosen database rather than assuming every system supports identical syntax or options.
Document and test the design
Link the requirements, model, schema, queries and results. Use invented, non-sensitive test data rather than real personal records. Explain limitations and trade-offs. Your submission should make the reasoning traceable so that a reader can understand why the database was designed that way, not only see a screenshot of it working once.
What data transformation means
Data transformation changes the representation or organisation of data for a defined purpose, such as converting a date format or restructuring records. It differs from changing the meaning arbitrarily. Explain the input, rules and expected output, and check that information is preserved or removed only as intended. Keep a record of assumptions and test unusual values.
